Technical exams

Audiometry

Hearing acuity assessment via earphones.

The test determines each ear’s auditory threshold when subjected to different frequencies.

If a hearing loss is detected, the test confirms the source of loss whether it is a mechanical transmission* or a neurosensorial ** cause.

* Mechanical transmission- issues related to the middle ear functioning including the eardrum, the ossicles and the Eustachian tube.

** Neurosensorial – issues related to the ear’s inner functioning or the auditory nerve.

Endoscopy

Examination of the upper respiratory tract by a flexible and fine optical fiber introduced through the nose.

Auditory evoked potentials

Assessment via electrodes of the auditory nerve’s electrical impulse’ propagation speed. Electrodes are placed behind both ears.

This assessment can reveal a compression of nerve fibers and in some cases, it enables to establish auditory thresholds with accuracy.

Recommendations to ensure an optimal exam :

Do not put foundation or makeup on the day of the exam.

Switch off any electronic devices throughout the examination.

Be relaxed.

Videonystagmography

Video recording of the eye movement designed to evaluate how both inner ears are functioning and affecting the balance system.

By stimulating the inner ear and nervous system and then carefully measuring the eye movements, the practitioner can learn of any abnormalities in the vestibular system. Your eye movements will be recorded by placing video recording goggles around the eyes while you are experiencing the following stimuli

*Rotary stimulation- Patient’s seat rotation in one direction then in the other

*Thermal stimulation- Irrigation of the auditory ducts both with hot and cold water thus causing an excitation or an inhibition of the inner ear’s functioning.

Recommendations to ensure an optimal exam:

Avoid heavy meals prior to taking the exam.

Do not put foundation or makeup on the day of the exam.

Maintain high levels of vigilance and concentration throughout the examination.

Skin allergy tests

A skin allergy tests is performed to determine whether you have a respiratory allergy. During allergy skin tests, your skin is exposed to suspected allergy-causing substances (allergens*) and is then observed for signs of an allergic reaction. If you are allergic, you will get a rapid reaction and after 15 to 20 minutes; the skin test reaction is measured for redness and swelling.

*Dust mites, molds, pollens, animal dander….

Recommendations to ensure an optimal exam :

Do not take any antihistamines or corticosteroids seven days prior the examination. Please avoid any corticosteroid cream on forearms three days prior to the examination.

NOTE: Doctors in the ENT department strictly test for respiratory allergies only.
