Rates

At Medicis, doctors are not covered by a convention and are therefore free to set their own individual fees.

What does it mean to have an agreement?

In Belgium, the Ministry of Health, the RIZIV, the mutual insurance companies and the doctors’ trade unions have established an official tariff for healthcare: this is the medical-mutual agreement. Doctors may choose to commit to the fees set out in this agreement, in which case they are known as ‘conventionnés’.

Some doctors are fully covered by the agreement, while others are not at all. In addition, some doctors may choose to be covered for only part of their services. In the latter case, this means that they undertake to comply with the fees set by the medical-mutual agreement on certain days and at certain times (hospital consultations, for example), while at other times (private consultations or at home, for example, when they will be ‘deconventionnés’) they are free to decide their own fees.

It should be noted that all doctors are obliged to inform their patients whether or not they are covered by the convention.

What about reimbursement by the insurer?

Whether or not the doctor is covered by an agreement, the amount reimbursed for the consultation by the health insurance company (mutuelle) is identical.

In practice, this means that any additional fees charged by a doctor who is not covered by a mutual health insurance agreement (in relation to the tariff set out in the agreement) remain entirely at the patient’s expense.
